INGLÊS CONVERSAÇÃO É NA VISION - O INGLÊS DO FUTURO

Chicken Stew RECIPE

A new year is upon us, and with it comes the making of resolutions. Almost all resolutions have something to do with improving ourselves. If your resolution is to eat better, here is a recipe that is versatile as well as delicious. If you double up on the veggies, you can also use them in my Vegetable Ragu recipe.
Bubba's Chicken Stew
Ingredients:
1 bell pepper, chopped
1 zucchini, chopped
1 celery stalk, chopped
1 carrot, chopped
1/2 cup chopped onion
1 clove garlic, minced
1 14 oz can diced tomatoes
1/2 cup chicken broth
2-3 chicken breasts
1 rope turkey sausage or polska kielbasa
1 TBL olive oil
Chili powder
Dried basil, parsley, and oregano
Trim chicken breasts of all visible fat, and sprinkle with chili powder to taste. Heat olive oil in large skillet, then add chicken. Cook until brown on all sides, but not cooked through. Cut up chicken into bite-size pieces.
Cut sausage into slices.
Place crock pot liner into crock pot. Add chicken, sausage, veggies, tomotoes, garlic, and broth into crock pot. Shake herbs onto mixture to taste. Stir. Set crock pot on LOW and cook for 6-7 hours.
Delicious to eat as is, or serve with pasta.
To make this into a yummy jambalaya, add a TBL of hot sauce (or more if you like it very spicy), and use canned diced tomatoes with basil and garlic or other herbs instead of plain diced tomatoes. Add in cooked shrimp for the last hour or two of cooking. Serve over rice.

RECIPE FOR A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Recipe For A Happy New Year
Take twelve, fine, full grown months, see that these are thoroughly free from all memories of bitterness, rancor, hate, jealousy; cleanse them completely from every clinging spite; pick off all specks of pettiness and littleness; in short, see that these months are freed from all the past-have them as fresh and clean as when they first came from the great storehouse of Time.

Cut these months into thirty or thirty-one equal parts. This batch will keep for just one year. Do not attempt to make up the whole batch at one time (so many persons spoil the entire lot in this way), but prepare one day at a time as follows:

Into each day put twelve parts of faith, eleven of patience, ten of courage, nine of work (some people omit this ingredient and so spoil the flavor of the rest), eight of hope, seven of fidelity, six of liberality, five of kindness, four of rest (leaving this out is like leaving the oil out of the salad-don't do it), three of prayer, two of meditation, and one well selected resolution. If you have no conscientious scruples, put in about a teaspoonful of good spirits, a dash of fun, a pinch of folly, a sprinkling of play and a heaping cupful of good humor.

Pour into the whole love ad libitum and mix with vim. Cook thoroughly in a fervent heat; garnish with a few smiles and a sprig of joy; then serve with quietness, unselfishness, and cheerfulness, and a Happy New Year is a certainty.~H.M.S.~

Wishing you all A Happy, Safe & Healthy New Year!

PIADAS TRADUZIDAS EM INGLES

Lawyers [Os advogados] should never ask [jamais deveriam fazer] a Mississippi grandma [à uma vovó do Mississippia question [uma pergunta] if they aren’t prepared [se não estiverem preparados] for the answer [para a resposta].  In a trial [Em um julgamento], a Southern small-town prosecuting attorney [um promotor de uma pequena cidade do sul (dos Estados Unidos)] called his first witness [testemunha], a grandmotherly [com aparência de vovó], elderly woman [senhora de idade] to the stand [para depor]. He approached her [se aproximou dela] and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know me?’ She responded, ‘Why, yes, I do know you, Mr. Williams. I’ve known you [Eu o conheço] since you were a boy [desde garoto], and frankly, you’ve been a big disappointment to me [para mim, você foi uma grande decepção]. You lie [Você é mentiroso; Você mente (lit.)], you cheat on your wife [trai a mulher], and you manipulate people and talk about them behind their backs [fala mal dos outros pelas costas]. You think you’re a big shot [Você se acha o máximo] when you haven’t the brains [não tem inteligência] to realize [para perceber] you’ll never amount to anything more than [você nunca vai passar de] a two-bit paper pusher [um burocrata de araque]. Yes, I know you.’
The lawyer was stunned [ficou de queixo caído]. Not knowing what else to do [Sem saber o que fazer], he pointed across the room [ele apontou para o outro lado do tribunal] and asked, ‘Mrs. Jones, do you know the defense attorney [advogado de defesa]?’
She again replied, ‘Why yes, I do. I’ve known Mr. Bradley since he was a youngster [jovem], too. He’s lazy [preguiçoso], bigoted [preconceituoso], and he has a drinking problem [é alcoólatra]. He can’t build a normal relationship [Não consegue ter um relacionamento normal] with anyone [com ninguém], and his law practice [seu desempenho como advogado] is one of the worst in the entire state. Not to mention [Sem dizer que] he cheated on his wife with three different women. One of them was your wife. Yes, I know him.’
The defense attorney nearly died [quase teve um troço; quase morreu (lit.)].
The judge [O juiz] asked both counselors [advogados] to approach the bench [para se aproximarem dele] and, in a very quiet voice [falando baixinho], said, ‘If either of you idiots [Se qualquer um de vocês, suas antas,] asks her if she knows me, I’ll send you both [mando os dois] to the electric chair.’

advogado
[lawyer, attorney-at-law, counsel, counselor; advocate; solicitor (BrE); barrister (BrE)* (aplicação geral; todos os ramos do Direito)] Cf. Bacharel em direito
*Há vários termos para designar advogado no sistema de common law. E há distinções entre a formação de profissionais nos Estados Unidos e no Reino Unido. Lawyer é termo genérico para quem tem formação jurídica e habilitação para advogar. Vale tanto para o advogado norte-americano como para o britânico. Attorney-at-law é usado nos Estados Unidos para designar quem exerce a advocacia, representando o cliente judicial ou extrajudicialmente. Equivale ao solicitor do Reino Unido, que é o profissional do Direito que presta consultoria em questões diversas, que envolvam a celebração de contratos e o ajuizamento de ações até um determinado momento processual. Neste ponto se distancia do attorney norte-americano, porque nas instâncias superiores do Reino Unido quem atua são os barristers (orientados previamente pelos solicitors, que os contatam, e com quem trabalham), cuja formação jurídica resulta de maior tempo de estudo e preparo que a dos solicitors. Counsel e counselor são termos geralmente empregados nos Estados Unidos para fazer menção ao profissional do Direito que presta consultoria jurídica, e assim são também chamados os advogados na sala de audiências, na condição de representantes das partes (p. ex.: “the counsel for the defense“; “the counsel for the plaintiff“). Counsel é também a designação que se dá ao advogado que trabalha no departamento jurídico de uma empresa, sendo general counsel o diretor desse departamento.

ADVOCATE = defensor, protetor
LAWYER = advogado
